Hemorrhoids Treatment Options

Hemorrhoids are veins that have become swollen in the lower rectum or anus. They are one of the most common ailments, affecting over half of the population by age 50. Common symptoms include:

• Rectal pain
• Swelling around the anus
• Bleeding during bowel movements
• Itching
• Hard and painful lumps around the anus

CAUSES:

Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure on the veins in and around the anus. A variety of factors can cause this pressure:

• Obesity
• Pregnancy
• Anal intercourse
• Constipation
• Sitting for long periods of time
• Anal infections

DIAGNOSIS:
A health professional will be able to determine whether or not a patient has hemorrhoids, simply by looking, or by performing a rectal examination. In some cases, other tests such as a colonoscopy or barium enema may be needed in order to rule out more serious conditions such as colon cancer.

TREATMENT OPTIONS:

Several surgical options are available to treat hemorrhoids, one of the most common being hemorrhoidectomy. This procedure has proven to be effective in the removal of the hemorrhoids, but is highly invasive, typically requires general anesthesia and can result in long-term complications. Laser treatment for hemorrhoids is an effective alternative to other types of surgery. Because a tiny laser is used, pinpoint accuracy can be achieved. The laser essentially vaporizes the hemorrhoids, and no incisions are necessary. No hospital stay is required, there is no bleeding involved, and the pain involved is minimal compared to other surgical options.
